Heute, edler Freund, sende ich wieder ein Päckchen Algen an Sie ab, welches ich eben von Miss Hussey als an der Encounter Bay gesammelt erhalten habe Da diese Localität noch nicht erschöpfend nach Algen durchsucht ist, möchte sich Neues darunter finden. Jedenfalls sind Arten darunter, die neue Data geben für die geographische Verbreitung. Da ich gern Fräulein Hussey zum Weitersammeln ermuthigen möchte, bitte ich, mir recht bald einige Notizen über diese und einige andere Sendungen zukommen zu lassen, hoffend dass mehrere Packete von ihr, welche ich im Lauf des Jahres 1893 an Sie absandte, richtig in Lund angekommen sind. Ihre Regsamkeit für Phycologie ist als die eines Octogenar wunderbar! Möge solche noch recht lange dauern!

So ist nun Kützing auch dahin; ich wurde auf ihn aufmerksam schon in den dreiziger

Today, noble friend, I am again sending off a small parcel of algae to you that I have just received from Miss Hussey as collected at Encounter Bay.

Since this locality is not yet exhaustively searched for algae, new things may be found among them. At any rate there are species among them that give new data for the geographical distribution. Since I should like to encourage Miss Hussey to further collecting , I ask you to send me some notes about these and some other consignments very soon, hoping that several parcels from her that I sent off to you during 1893 have arrived safely in Lund. Your activity for phycology is amazing as that of an octogenarian! May such last for a long time yet!

Friedrich Traugott Kützing died on 9 September 1893.

I became aware of him as early as the thirties of the century, namely through diatom frustules.

That is, the hard siliceous coat of these microscopic organisms. Kützing discovered this feature in 1833 but his observations were not published, although Ehrenberg (1834), p. 575, reported and confirmed his findings.
