My dear Baron
As it will be out of my power to be with you in S.A. I desire to express a hope that
you may avail yourself of the opportunity for advancing an interest in the Antarctic.
His Honor the Chief Justice
has long manifested a desire to promote the commercial interest in the Northern Territory
in which I have also a strong sympathy; he probably may recognize the Antarctic as
an opening further "unemployed" in whaling and sealing — give his honor, please, my
warmest respects and should you meet his colleague Judge Bundey say likewise — My
earliest recollection of S.A. includes Sturt, Light and earliest explorers — whom
I should now miss — but the recollection of whom should inspire the present generation.
Hoping you may return to be welcomed by your unworthy friend

Pasco was evidently expecting M to attend the forthcoming Adelaide meeting of the
Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science. At the last minute, however,
ill-health prevented M from going; see M to A. Macdonald, 25 September 1893.
