Erlauben Sie mir, hochgeehrter Herr Redakteur, in Bezug auf Notizen über Marram-Gras
in der letzten Nummer Ihres geschätzten Blattes, die Aufmerksamkeit darauf zu lenken,
dass schon in den siebziger Jahren dieses Jahrhunderts die
von mir in die Kolonie Viktoria eingeführt wurde, und dass nahe der südaustralischen
Grenze meilenweit dieses Gras naturalisiert ist, nach Säungen von mir zuerst gelieferten
Samens, unter der Obhut des Mr. Amery bei Port Fairy. Von dort ist diese wichtige
Pflanze zuerst massenweise in andere australische Kolonien versandt, und wird noch
viel von dort jetzt bezogen. Es sind Photogramme dort auch erlangbar, welche die Umwandlung
der Küsten-Landschaft durch die Psamma zeigen, ganz nackte Flugsand Züge vor 30 Jahren,
wie ich jene Gegend besuchte, jetzt ein Anblick wie der weiter Cerealien-Felder. Gleichzeitig
führte ich das Lyme- Gras (
; Vide „Select plants for industrial culture«) in Australien ein, z. B. bei Oueenscliffe
; denn beide zusammen bewältigen ja auch hauptsächlich den Flugsand der Meeresküsten
der nördlichen Hemisphäre, und so sind diese zwei Gräser mir in ihrer natur-ökonomischen
Wichtigkeit bereits vor 50 Jahren sowohl an der Nordsee als am baltischen Meere bekannt
geworden. Es ist nur gerecht für Mr. Amery und die örtlichen Behörden in Belfast (Viktoria),
dass deren bezügliches umsichtsvolles vieljähriges Streben auch durch Ihr schönes
Blatt weiter bekannt werde.

Permit me, highly esteemed editor, in reference to the notes on marram grass in the
last number of your valuable paper,
to direct attention to the fact that already in the 70s of this century
had been introduced by me into the Colony of Victoria, and that near the South Australian
border this grass is naturalized for miles after sowing of seed first supplied by
me, under the care of Mr Amery
near Port Fairy. From there this important plant was sent first on a huge scale to
the other Australian colonies, and still much is obtained from there now. Photographs
are also obtainable there showing the change of the coastal landscape by the Psamma, quite bare drifting sand ridges 30 years ago, when I visited that region, now a
view like the wide cereal fields. At the same time I introduced lyme grass (
; see Select plants for industrial culture
) into Australia, e.g. at Queenscliffe
; because both together also mainly subdue the drift sand of the sea coasts of the
northern hemisphere and so these two grasses were known to me in their natural economic
importance already 50 years ago both on the North Sea as well as on the Baltic Sea.
It is only just for Mr Amery and the local officials in Belfast (Victoria)
that their far-sighted efforts of many years in this regard become more widely known
through your fine newspaper.
