When the Estimate for the coming year for the Government Botanist's department were
considered by the Legislative Assembly on 28 September, the member for Ballarat West,
Richard Vale, launched a vigorous attack on M, declaring that in a period of government
retrenchments, his position was a waste of public money. Several members sprang to
M's defence and the Estimate was then passed; Patterson did not make a speech but
is recorded as having made an interjection that could be seen as favourable to M's
cause (Victoria, Parliamentary debates, 1893, pp. 1901-5, at p. 1902).
