Allow me, dear and honoured Sir, to send you a letter, received from Prof Goodale,
the celebrated Prof and Director of the bot. Garden of Harvard-University, Boston,
and two years ago the President of the American Assoc for Advancement of Science.
I send this letter because Prof Goodale refers so touchingly to my eulogy of your
lamented father.
I hope the letter of condolence from the Boys Naturalists Association here to you
was showing to you in their "eloge" in how wide esteem the memory of your parent is
held. You have there even a Society also, which published its "Les feuilles des jeunes
Naturalistes", a publication which comes also under my notice here. Although I am
since 47 years a British Subject, I am in my tendencies a Cosmopolitan, and this reminds
me that — to judge from name — your respected mother was of German origin!
