The file contains a typed copy of this letter made at the Chief Secretary's Office.
T. R. Wilson Esqr
Under-Secretary.
Sir.
I have the honor to report, that recently immense successes have been obtained with
the dissemination of Austral. Saltbushes in the interior of South-Africa for pastural
purposes on initiating measures of my own, and it would promote this cause, if a copy
of the 9 Decades of the "Iconography of Salsolaceous plants," which hitherto appeared,
could be sent to the Government at Capetown. My communications on this subject have
simply been with Prof. M'Owan of that City, with whom I have corresponded professionally
and departmentally for more that 30 years. In the event of the hon the Premier approving
of the suggestion, that the work on the "Saltbushes" may be sent to the Cape Government
(which showed such generous attention to these Colonies lately in financial respects,)
then I may mention, that the Steamer "Port Pirie" will leave for Capetown direct early
next month.

The Premier, James Patterson, who was also Chief Secretary, minuted his approval on
the typed copy of M's letter on 23 June 1893. The file was sent to M to inform him
of this on 26 June, and he returned the file on 27 June 'with best thanks'. G. Bell,
for the Under Secretary, sent the file to the Government Printer, R. Brain, on 30
June 1893 requesting him 'to be good enough to note the Chief Secretary's approval'.
On 3 July, Brain replied saying that the books had been forwarded on 30 June.
I have the honor to be,
Sir, your obedient servant
Ferd. von Mueller,
Gov. Botanist.
