The file also contains a 'List of Officers in the Chief Secretary's Department who
have attained the age of sixty years'. There are ten names on the list with another
name that has been crossed out. Under the public service regulations, Officers who
had reached retirement age could be retained only if the Government could persuade
the Public Service Board that it was in the public interest to do so. James Patterson,
the Chief Secretary, marked the names of four officers whom he wished to see retained,
namely M, R. Ellery (Government Astronomer), H. Hayter (Government Statist) and E.
Owen (Actuary, Friendly Societies). However, the letterpress book contains only letters
to M, Ellery and Hayter communicating the continuation of their appointments.
I have the honor to be
Sir,
Your obedient servant
Baron F. von Mueller K.C.M.G.
Government Botanist.
