Nach der besonderen Loyalität, welche Sie mir erwiesen haben, lieber Herr Tepper,
ist es nur gerecht von mir, Ihnen sofort zu sagen, dass in der letzten Versammlung
der L.S. von N.S.W. ein Agitater (wahrscheinlich Turner aber sein Name ist mir nicht
gennant) bei Vorbringung der Flora-Angelegenheit in einer solchen Weise für den Brisb.
Eindringling aufstand, dass Mr Maiden die Sache in der Versammlung nicht weiter verfolgte.
Wenige der LS. dort beschäftigen sich eingehend mit Pflanzen, u daher können die Meisten
sich auch kein klares Bild von der Sachlage mache. Turner ist auch kein echte wissenschaft
Phytologe; seine Pflanze Kentniss von Australien beschränkt sich auf vermeintliche
Nahrpflanzen für Viezucht,
u viele die er angiebt friste das Vieh auch nur aus Noth, ja er hatte sogar die giftigen
-Arten mit aufgenommen. Ich habe ihn durch Correspondenz, Pflanzen Benennungen u.s.w.
durch Jahre belehrt; aber müsste mich bei Gelegenheit tadelnd ausdrücken, da er für
seine Agricultur-Artikel meine ["]
Select Plants" benutzte ohne Anerkennung. Dazu kommt, dass mich als Ausländer
Neid und Eifersucht
stets von einem Theil der Colonisten verfolgt hat. Der Zweck meines Schreibens ist
nun, Sie zu bitten in ihrer
landsmännischen u wissenschaftlichen Treue, meinen Wunsch auszusprechen, dass diese
Angelegenheit in Ihrer Royal Soc. und in anderen Kreisen der Öffentlichkeit nicht
weiter dort erörtert werde, u so sind Sie wohl so gütig dies Ihren mehreren Freunden,
besonders dem prächtigen Hr Holtze mitzutheilen. Ich hätte vielleicht richtig gethan
gegen den Gebrauch meiner Fragm. u anderen Schriften über Queensl. hinaus öffentlich
zu protestiren, aber als Regierungs Beamter ist dies schwer für mich, u mittlerweile
ist das Individuum, welches nie in anderen Colonien reiste auch wenig Pflanzen von
dort (u diese nicht autentisirt) hat, schon im vollem Zuge mit seinem Supplement,
[…] ⅞ selbst seiner eignen Colonie, die er nie bereist, bequem mit Eisenbahn u Kutsche
zu befahren, um eine volle Flora von QL zu schreiben. Seine Eitelkeit treibt ihn
seinen
Namen mit dem von Bentham zu verbinden. Aus unseren neuesten Berechnungen hier ist
die Zahl der neuen Pfl. aus QL. bedeutend weniger seit die Flora Bände erschienen
als die Zahl der Novitäten aus den anderen Colonien zusammen genommen. Er selbst hat
gute haltbare Arten nur wenige geliefert (d.h. Vasculares) u nicht ein einziges neues
Genus begründet, denn sein
, worüber er mich nicht berieth, ist eine
. Es ist "on false premises" dass man sagt, ich wolle in einem Supplement, der oft
tadelhaften u nicht naturgemässen Sequenz u Form der Flora folgen.
Wenn ich auch schon 1862 B & H. besonders aufforderte in deren Genera u B. in der
Flora die Monochlam. zu vertheilen, was man mir rund abschlug "weil man DC. folgen
müsse" (wie wir einst Alle noch im Beginn meiner Forschungen L. folgten) — so habe
ich
nie
erklärt, dass ich der Flora für einen neuen Band nicht folgen wolle. Im Gegentheil
würde ich es der Convenienz halber thun.
Das
Würdigste
ist für mich
schweigend
auf die Ausbeutung meiner Forschungen u Publicationen in Brisbane u
stolz
hinabzusehen
, u es der Critik wahrer u gerechter Wissenschaft zu überlassen, die Procedur in Brisbane
zu kritisiren.
Ich halte es auch meiner
ganz unwürdig
, mich mit einem solchen Eindringling auf mein litterarisches Eigenthum zu
messen
in einer Art
Wettlauf
. Meine Idee war, da in Europa, Amerika usw. der Census u die Fragmenta des Meiste
der Flora ergänzen, dass ein
postumus
Band nach meinem Tode erscheine, woraus man sähe,
wie weit
ich seit 1847 gekommen sei, was denn auch wohl recht bald sein wird, u wozu für meinen
Sarg von Brisbane denn auch manche Nägel geliefert sind! Ich kann mich auch dem nicht
unterwerfen, dass die Austral. Assoc. in Adelaide über eine
solche Sache
, in der ich
allein
Richter sein kann entscheide! Sie und Holtze werden dies Gefühl meinerseits gerechtfertigt
halten vielleicht aber nicht Tate u Andere. Da jede Colonie, ausser W.A., Ihren neuen
Band hat, ist ein
Suppl. der Flora
auch
nicht
dringend nötig. Vom halben Areal des austral. Continents haben wir noch gar keine
Standorte, also müss irgend ein bald erscheinendes Suppl doch noch wieder supplementirt
werden. Ich werde mich
beeilen
, einen Band, der als Ergänzung der Flor. Austr. betrachtet werden kann, sobald wie
thunlich zu liefern. Aber erst müssen die Elder-Pflanzen vollendet werden. Etwa 600
habe ich benannt oder revidirt, nun liegen aber nahe 100 noch zurück. Bedenken Sie,
in grossen W.A. Gattungen wie
,
,
,
&c. Arten zu benennen, wenn an den Exemplaren entweder Blüthen oder Früchte fehlen!
Bis jetzt habe ich noch keine Bewilligung von der Regierung, dass der beabsichtigte
Band in der Gov Printing Office gedruckt werden kann, denn auch in
der
Anstalt sollen extensiva "Retrenchments" gemacht werden. Ich war erst gestern wieder
in der Chief Sec. Office u leitete die Sache gleich viel, wie ich von der Arroganz
in Brisbane hörte. Der niedrigste Tender einer Privat Druckerei für Verlag ist eine
Subsidie von £150. Da ich ganz unvermögend bin, nachdem ich
Alles
in meine Studien, Reisen, Sammlungen u Bibliothek gesenkt, kann ich diese £150 nicht
selbst liefen, u in diesen Zeiten der Bedrücking ist es ganz hoffnungslos Subscribenten
zu sammeln, selbst wenn ich Zeit dafür hätte. Ihre Liste der Pflanzen von Roebuck-Bay
ist ein netter Beitrag zur Flora N.W. Australiens. Die
würde ich bearbeitet haben, aber es
fehlten die Früchte
u eine Art in dem Genus erfordert die Kenntniss der Frucht mit reifen Samen. Dazu
kommt dass diese Pflanze mit einer Art Süd Asiens verwandt ist, u vielleicht mit solcher
zusammenfällt, so dass ich es
besser hielt
mit der Diagnosticirung zu warten, bis reife Frucht erlangt sei. In mehreren anderen
Fällen war das Unterbleiben der Benennung der Roebuck-Bay Pfl. keine Vernachlässigung.
Ich arbeite durchsichtlich 16 Stunden täglich, Sonntage u Festtage eingeschlossen,
aber oft muss ich den absoluten Verlust der Zeit bedauern, wenn man vergebens versucht
eine
vielleicht
neue Pfl. nach unvollständigen Material systematisch zu erledigen. Die meisten Sammler
wollen sie nicht die Mühe geben gutes Material zu liefern.
Wollen Sie Ihren Sohn in Beverley befragen, ob er, wie er im N.W.A. war, von dem
Umkommen einer Parthie von 4 (wahrscheinlich Leichardt) etwa 20 Tage Reise südostlich.

Ich habe Moore u Maiden auch um Standorte Liste seltner Pff. für mich gebeten eine
Liste aller solcher Standorte, als auf der Pflanzen Zetteln hier nicht notirt sind.
Bedenken Sie z. B. in Bezug auf Sequenz, dass Bentham
weit entfernt von
stellt! u dass Hooker fil
aus den Salsolaceen ausschliesst.

After the particular loyalty that you have shown me, dear Mr Tepper, it is only right
for me to say to you immediately that in the last meeting of the Linnean Society of
New South Wales an agitator (probably Turner
but his name is not known to me) in the bringing forward of the Flora business stood up for the Brisbane intruder in such a manner that Mr Maiden did not
pursue the matter further in the meeting.
Few of the Linnean Society there concern themselves with plants in depth, and therefore
the majority cannot also have a clear idea of the situation. Turner is also no real
scientific phytologist; his plant knowledge of Australia is restricted to supposed
fodder plants for stock raising, and many that he indicates only feed the stock out
of necessity, indeed he even had accepted the poisonous
species as well. Through the years, I have instructed him in plant nomenclature and
so on by correspondence, but on occasion have had to express myself reproachfully,
because he used my Select plants for his agricultural articles without acknowledgment. In addition to that,
envy and jealousy
have always been directed at me as a foreigner from a part of the colonists. The
object of my letter is now to ask you in your compatriotic and scientific loyalty
to express my desire that this matter not be discussed further there in your Royal
Society and in other public circles, and so will you be so kind as to communicate
this to your several friends, especially the splendid Mr Holtze. I perhaps would have
acted correctly to protest publicly at the use of my Fragmenta and other writings about Queensland, but as a government official this is difficult
for me and in the meantime the individual, who has never travelled in other colonies
also has few plants from there (and these not authenticated), is in full flight with
his Supplement already, […] ⅞ even of his own colony that he never travelled, to travel
through comfortably with railway and coach, in order to write a complete flora of
Queensland.
His vanity drives him to connect
his
name with that of Bentham. From our latest calculation here the number of new plants
from Queensland is significantly fewer since the Flora volumes were published than the number of novelties from the other colonies taken
together. He himself has produced only few good tenable species (that is Vasculares)
and has not described a single new genus because his
, which he did not discuss with me, is a
. It is "on false premises" that it was said that I intended [not]
to follow the often faulty and not natural sequence and form of the Flora in a supplement.
If even as early as 1862 I particularly asked Bentham & Hooker in the Genera and Bentham in the Flora
to divide the Monochlamydeae, which was refused me point blank "because De Candolle
must be followed"
(as we once all still followed L.
at the beginning of my researches) — so I have
never
declared that I did not intend to follow the Flora for a new volume. On the contrary I would do it for the sake of convenience.
The
most dignified thing
for me is to
overlook
the exploitation of my research and publications in Brisbane
silently
and
proudly
and to leave it to the critics of true and just science to criticize the procedure
in Brisbane.
I regard it also on my part as
quite unworthy
to
compete
against such an intruder on my literary property in a kind of
race
. Because in Europe, America and so on the Census and the Fragmenta supplement the majority of the Flora, my idea was that a
posthumous
volume appear
so that after my death, which will probably also be very soon and for which also
many a nail for my coffin is supplied by Brisbane, one saw
how far
I had come since 1847. I also cannot submit to the Australasian Association in Adelaide
deciding on
such a matter
in which I
alone
can be judge!
You and Holtze will regard this feeling on my part as justified, but perhaps not
Tate and others. Since each colony except Western Australia has its new volume, a
supplement to the
Flora
is also not urgent. From half the area of the Australian continent we still have no
localities at all, thus any kind of supplement published soon must be supplemented
yet again.
I will
hurry up
producing a volume that can be regarded as supplementing the Flora australiensis as soon as feasible. However, first the Elder plants must be completed. I have named
or revised about 600, but now nearly 100 still remain. Consider naming species in
large Western Australian genera such as
,
,
,
&c, when either flowers or fruits are lacking in the specimens!
Until now I have still no approval from the Government that the intended volume can
be printed in the Government Printing Office, since also in
that
institution extensive "retrenchments" are to be made.
Only yesterday I was again in the Chief Secretary's Office and introduced the matter
immediately when I heard of the arrogance in Brisbane. The lowest tender of a private
printery for the publication requires a subsidy of £150. Since I am quite without
means, after sinking
everything
into my studies, travels, collections and library, I cannot supply this £150 myself,
and in these times of depression it is quite hopeless to collect subscribers, even
if I had the time for it. Your list of plants of Roebuck Bay
is a nice contribution to the flora of Northwest Australia. I would have dealt with
the Portulaca, but it
lacks the fruit
and a species in the genus requires the knowledge of the fruit with ripe seeds.
In addition this plant is related to a species of south Asia, and perhaps coincides
with it, so that I
think
it
preferable
to wait with the diagnosis until ripe fruit is obtained. In several other cases the
omitting of names of Roebuck Bay plants was no neglect.
I work on average 16 hours daily, Sundays and holidays included, but often I must
regret the absolute loss of time if one tries in vain to deal systematically with
perhaps
new plants from incomplete material. The majority of collectors will not take the
trouble to supply good material.
Would you ask your son in Beverley
whether, when he was in N.W.A.,
he [heard] of the death of a party of 4 (probably Leichhardt) about 20 days' journey
south-east.

You can easily understand how this attempted plundering of my work enrages me.
Turner seems to have secured subscribers for him in Sydney.
I have also asked Moore and Maiden for locality lists of rare plants for me, a list
of all such localities as are not noted here on the plant labels.
Consider for example, in reference to the sequence, that Bentham put
far away from
and that Hooker fil. excluded
from the Salsolaceae.
