Allow me, dear Dr Bride, to ask you, whether you can give me,
without
much
trouble
to yourself any information, whether the "
Salcolaceous plants
", when successively dispatched from the public Library, went also to Berlin? At the
hon the Premier's Office the sending out of the work was approved on an application
of mine, dated 16th Sept 1890,
and in the list, submitted then by me, were the following 4 Berlin-Recipients.

The reason of writing to you, is a difficulty, which arose to Dr Volkens of Berlin
i.e. to have access to the work while he wrote for the "Pflanzen Familien" quite recently
a succinct account of the Salsolaceae of the world.
I had sent him several decades on my
private expenses
, thinking he would easily in the Prussian metropolis find all nine decades, which
have hitherto appeared; but I did not think it necessary to mention the particular
recipients.

T. Bride forwarded this request to Patrick Quirk on 17 May 1893 who replied the same day that Decades 1-6 were forwarded on 2
April 1891, Decade 7 on 20 August 1891, Decade 8 on 11 December 1891 and Decade 9
on 29 March 1892. [In the 'Blue Book' for 1890, p. 39, Patrick Quirk was a 'Junior
assistant' in the Library; his duties were described as having 'to acquire general
knowledge of Library, and special knowledge of portion placed under his charge; assists
in various clerical dutries'.]
With regardful remembrance your
Ferd von Mueller
