South-Yarra,
12 May 1893
T. R. Wilson Esqr
Under Secretary.
In reply to your memorandum, received this afternoon by telephone, I beg respectfully to state, that the Staff in the Gov. Botanists Establishment is not in excess of requirements . The demands for information on my branch of the service are overwhelming, and the estimates for the new finance-year are in proportion to other Institutions very limited, while the correspondence is very extensive , and the maintenance and utilisation of the vast Herbarium requires such great care. I would therefore solicit, that my small staff may remain through the kindness of the honorable the Chief Secretary
I have the honor to be, Sir,
your obedient servant
Ferd. von Mueller,
Gov. Botanist
I may add, that I have two juniors employed since many months on my own expense in the establishment and must continue them also hereafter
