In opening a general meeting of the Victorian Branch of the Royal Geographical Society
of Australasia on 3 May 1893, M as President of the Branch referred to the Branch’s
celebration the previous October of the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s
voyage to America, and to the opening more recently of the World’s Columbian Exhibition
in Chicago (B94.06.02). Following his address and the reading by the Secretary, A.
C. Macdonald, of a letter from the American Consul-General, ‘A series of portraits
of Columbus, King Ferdinand, Queen Isabella, and persons and scenes connected with
the discoveries of Columbus were then shown, by means of the lime-light lantern, by
Mr. Searle, and explained by Mr. Macdonald’.
