The text given here is from the report of the meeting of the Ararat Borough Council held on 29 March 1893, in the Ararat advertiser and chronicle for the Stawell and Wimmera D istricts, 31 March 1893, p. [4]. The Town Clerk's letter is dated to 30 March 1893 as the earliest that it is likely to have been written.

The motion followed a discussion about the best method of saving 'their blue gums from the grubs that were destroying them'. No response from M has been found in the newspaper reports of the meetings of the Borough Council, but at the meeting of 18 August a letter from 'Mr. French' was read. However, the Council rejected his suggestion to plug the holes made by grubs with pieces of wood dipped in tar, or by injecting carbolic acid into the holes' (Ararat advertiser and chronicle for the Stawell and Wimmera Districts, 18 August 1893, p.
