Im Beginn dieses Monats, hochgeehrter Freund, habe ich Ihnen weibliche blühende Exemplare
von
gesandt. Ich hatte solche eben erst von Mr J. Br. Wilson erhalten, der mir auf meine
Vorfrage nun schreibt, dass er solche aus einer Tiefe von etwa
24
Fuss erlangt habe! Kein Wunder, dass wir so oft darnach vergebens suchten. Er hat
ein eignes grosses Boot und einen Schleppnetz-Apparat, so dass er günstiger gestellt
ist, wie sonst Jemand hier in Bezug auf den Erlang von Meer-Gewächsen, denen u den
niedrigsten Invertebraten des Oceans er auch fürs Sammeln seine ganze Ferien-Zeiten
widmet. So werden wir von ihm nun auch wohl bald männliche Blüthen erlangen.
Es ist merkwürdig, dass
Phanerogamen
in einer solchen Tiefe blühen, und Sie könnten dies wohl dort bekannt machen. Bornet
in den Annal. des sc. nat. (die ich besitze) hält an dem Gattungs Namen
fest, den Willdenow allerdings auf die eine richtige Art reducirte. Dies leitet nun
zu den Frage,
wann
der
zweite
Theil des tom. IV von W. sp. pl. veröffentlicht wurde? Sicherlich nicht 1805, wie
Pritzel angiebt, denn in solchem Falle müssten die beiden Theile des 4tn Bandes
gleich
zeitig erschienen sein, und dann wäre der erste Theil der 5tn Bandes doch gewiss vor
1810 herausgekommen.
Da Sie dort in so fern an der litterarischen Quelle sind, möchte ich Sie befragen,
wann tom. IV, 2 denn eigentlich erschien? In den "Pfanzen-Familien"
haben
Sie
ja auch Cymodocea beibehalten.

Können Sie sich mit meiner Vereinfachung des Juss-D.C. System befreunden? Es ist das

Ich schickte das beste Material eilig nach dem Empfang an Sie ab. Seitdem beobachtete
ich die membran. acuminirten Bracteen, den dicken kurzen Pedical, die schuppigen Organe,
welche an die
Sepala
erinnern. Die Zahl der Stigmata 3-6 ist auch merkwürdig. Indessen wird dies doch
wohl nur genügen für eine subgenarische Section,
, wie Sie solche ja auch selbst in den Pflanzen-Familien angenommen haben. Mir bleibt
jetzt nicht Musse für derartige vergleichende Arbeiten.

At the beginning of this month, highly esteemed Friend, I sent you female flowering
specimens of
. I had only just received them from Mr J. Br. Wilson, who now writes at my request
that he had collected them from a depth of about
24
feet! No wonder that we so often sought after them in vain. He has his own large
boat and a drag-net apparatus, so that he is as favourably placed as anyone here in
reference to the acquisition of marine plants; he also devotes his whole holiday time
for collecting to them and the lowest invertebrates of the ocean. So we will probably
also soon get male flowers from him.
It is remarkable that
phanerogams
flower in such a depth, and you could probably make this known there. Bornet
in the Annales des sciences naturelles (which I have) sticks to the genus name
, which Willdenow however reduced to the one proper species. This now leads to the
question,
when
was the
second
part of vol. IV of W's Species plantarum published? Certainly not 1805 as Pritzel stated, because in such a case both the
parts of the fourth volume must have been published at the
same
time, and then the first part of the fifth volume would certainly have come out before
1810.
Since you are there in this respect at the literary source, I would like to ask you
when vol. IV, 2 really was published? In the Pflanzen Familien
you
also retain Cymodocea.

I sent off the best material to you quickly after receipt. Since then I observed the
membranous acuminate bracts, the thick short pedicle, the scabrous organs, which are
reminiscent of the
sepala
of
. The number of the stigmata 3-6 is also remarkable. However, this will surely only
suffice for a subgeneric section,
, as you have also accepted even in the Pflanzen-Familien. I don't have time now for that kind of comparative work.
