Nachdem ich mit letztwöchentlicher Post Ihnen, hochgeehrter Herr Professor, meinen besten Dank dargebracht für die ausserordentliche Auszeichnung von der grossen altehrwürdigen Kgl. Schwedischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, — erreichte mich Ihr gütiger Brief vom 30 Nov., aus welchem ich ersehe, wie überaus hoch die Ehre ist, welche mir zu Theil geworden! Es rührt mich auch besonders, dass ich der Nachfolger von Regel bin! Durch 40 Jahre war ich mit ihm nicht nur in amtlicher sondern auch in befreundeter Correspondenz, u wenige Wochen vor seinem Tode schrieb er mir noch eigenhändig einen Brief den ich als den Abschied von ihm betrachten musste, da er offenbar sein Ende herannahen sah! Sein Andenken wird mir stets heilig bleiben. Für die Schenkung Ihres prächtigen Hort. Bergian. Bandes sprach ich Ihnen auch bereits schon meine beste Anerkennung aus.

Nachdem ich die Liste derjenigen meiner nun auch erhalten, welche sich bereits in der Bibliothek der Königl. Akademie befinden, ist es mir gleich möglich gewesen, etwas für Vervollständigung abzusenden, so den "Key to the System of Vict. plants", in welchem Werke ich eine Vereinfachung des Juss.-D.C. Systems entwickelte, u. in welchem es mir auch gelang eine Dichotomie ganz nach dem natürlichen System ohne irgend eine Unterbrechung durchzuführen vom Beginn der Ordnungen bis zum Ende der Arten.

Auch habe ich die neueste (und bedeutend erweiterte Ausgabe der "Select plants" gesandt. Mehreres Andere, wie die "Papuan plants" habe ich selbst nicht mehr noch ist es direct kaufbar, doch werde ich diese Bücher wohl gelegentlich antiquarisch herbei schaffen können.

Haben Sie Campbell's New Hebrides für welches kleine Werk ich einen phytographischen Anhang schrieb? Besitzen Sie dort auch vielleicht schon Wittsteins Chemie der Pflanzen-Theile, welche ich ins Englische übersetzte, und mit vielen Nachträgen vermehrte? Trockne Pflanzen-Exemplare will ich von Zeit zu Zeit in kleinen Päckchen durch die Post senden, was das Einfachste des Schickens ist.

reached me from which I gather how exceedingly high is the honour that has fallen to my lot! It also moves me particularly that I am the successor of Regel! I was in correspondence with him for 40 years not only officially but also as a friend and a few weeks before his death he wrote me a letter

still in his own hand, that I had to regard as the farewell from him, because he obviously saw his end approaching! His memory will always remain sacred to me. I have also already expressed my best acknowledgement for the present of your splendid Horto Bergiano volume.

After I also receive the list of those things of mine that are already in the library of the Royal Academy, it may be possible for me to send something to complete it, such as the Key to the System of Victorian plants,

in which work I developed a simplification of the Jussieu-De Candolle system and in which I also succeeded in carrying out a dichotomy completely according to the natural system without any interruption from the beginning of the orders to the end of the species.

Also I have sent the latest (and considerably enlarged edition of the Select plants.
