in which you inform me, that his Excellency the Governor with advise of the Executive Council has been pleased, to allow me retaining my position as Governm. Botanist til the middle of this year.

Under the Public Service Act, officers past the official retirement age (1865 in 1892) could only be retained in post if their duties were essential and could not be performed by another officer already in the Service. T. Wilson to M, 31 March 1892 had informed M that his position had been renewed until 31 December 1892. Wilson on 7 December had sent a memorandum about M's further retention to the Premier, who recommended retention to the Public Service Board which on 14 December requested further information. The Secretary to the Premier's Department notified Wilson on 30 December 1892 that M, R. L. J. Ellery (Government Astronomer) and H. H. Hayter (Government Statist) were to be retained until 30 June 1893 (E. Thomas to T. Wilson, 30 December 1892; V93/14, unit 818, VPRS 3992/P inward registered correspondence, VA 475 Chief Secretary's Department, Public Record Office, Victoria).
May I beg of you to convey to the Government and particularly to the honorable the Chief Secretary my best thanks for the consideration, thus again shown, and to express my assurance, that nothing shall be left done

on my part, to deserve also in future the approval of my Superiors, and that I may thus be able, to contribute in my own special way to the advancement and renown of our colony also in future

I have the honor to be,
