Shillinglaw’s letter (not found) to which this is the reply was evidently in response to M to J. Shillinglaw, 20 September 1892. There were three Mondays between that letter and M’s Columbus Jubilee Oration at the Melbourne Town Hall on 12 October 1892, mentioned in the postscript. Given the urgency expressed in M’s initial request for help, September 26 is more likely than 3 or 10 of October.
Monday.
Just received your letter, dear Mr Shillinglaw, and am very sorry to hear of your troubles. I had no idea, that difficulties could arise to you in this way after your long and useful career. Let me trust, that all will be right in the end.

Shillinglaw's troubles not identified.
Always regardfully your
Ferd. von Mueller.
Pray, do under these sad circumstances not trouble about the Columbus-festival. I have a lot of thing already, so will not worry you.
