The letter appears in the Society's letter-book between letters dated 8 July 1886 and 3 December 1886. However, it is probable that it has been mis-filed, and It is dated to 17 May 1892 on the basis that at the annual meeting of the local branch of the London Missionary Society, held at Scots Church, Collins Street, Melbourne on Thursday 19 May 1892, Lawes spoke on missionary work in New Guinea, including inter-denominational co-operation (Age, 23 May 1892, p. 3). Other addresses by Lawes in Melbourne in the 1880s and 1890s have been identified, but no record of one on a Thursday has been found.
Tuesday
I just learn, dear Mr Macdonald, that a church-meeting in honor of the Rev Mr Lawes will take place on Thursday evening of this week in the Collins Str Church. I shall attend, but not likely be required to take part in the proceedings. Perhaps you like to come also and some of our Colleagues.
Regardfully your
Ferd von Mueller
