Our warm appreciation of our distinguished Colleagues of the Victorian Council is due & heartily accorded, for the special consideration shown to our revered Patron & Representative, Sir Henry Norman.
2
Norman, Governor of Queensland, had been elected an Honorary Member of the Victorian Branch of the Royal Geographical Society of Australasia; see H. Norman to M, 8 April 1892. Norman had been Patron of the Queensland Branch of the Society since 1889 and took an active part in its affairs. He represented the Branch while also serving as leader of Queensland's official delegation to the fourth congress of the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science held in Hobart in January 1892, at which he issued the formal invitation to the Association to hold its sixth congress in Brisbane in 1895.(It had already been arranged that the fifth congress was to be held in Adelaide.) See Report of the fourth meeting..., p. xvii.
Let us hope that, other representatives of Her Majesty the Queen in Australasian colonies may follow the high example set by his Excellency our Governor.
With deep respect for you, & your learned officers of the Society,
I am
dear Baron von Mueller,
very faithfully yours
J. P. Thomson
Baron Sir F von Mueller,
K.C.M.G, F.R.S., Ph. D., etc., etc.
President R.G.S.A. Vic.
