Heute, geehrter Herr Dr Nordstedt, sende ich Ihnen £8 als den Rest der Bezahlung für die erste Decade der Characeen Australiens, u werden Sie diese Summe am dortigen Postamt ausbezahlt erhalten. Sehr bedauere ich es, dass bei den so sehr reducirten Mitteln des Departements es mir nicht möglich ist, auch künftige Decaden geldlich zu unterstützen.

Da ich aber beinahe die ganzen Kosten des Zeichnens und des Druckes getragen, für die erste Decade, hoffe ich, dass das schöne Werk schnell bekannt werden wird, u dass Sie dann Subscribenten genug erhalten werden für die folgenden Decaden. Ich bin bereit Subscribenten in Australien zu sammeln, wenn Sie es möglich halten, das Werk auf solche Weise fortzusetzen. Dr Cooke in der Grevillea referirt günstig darüber, sagt aber kein Wort dabei, dass der Gedanke der Arbeit von mir ausging, und dass die ganze Ausgabe von mir getragen wurde.

Der beigefügte Brief von Mr Bailey sagt, dass er das Werk durch mein Departement bekommen würde. In keinem Ihrer Briefe, die mich erreichten, ist aber etwas derartiges von Ihnen wünschend ausgesprochen, u. da er mir keine Characeen gesandt (oder vor Jahren sehr wenige vielleicht) hatte er keine Ansprüche an mich darauf. Glücklicherweise hatte ich Ihm aus freien Antrieb auch von diesem Werk ein Frei-Exemplar gesandt, wie von allen meinen anderen Werken, - sonst wäre ich ja, ohne es zu wissen, in die unbeneidenswerthe Verdächtigung gekommen, als ob ich hätte ihm diese Decade vorenthalten ! Hoffentlich werden Sie künftig beim Weiter Erscheinen des Werkes mein Departement mit dem von Brisbane nicht auf gleichen Fuss stellen, nach den grossen Aufopferungen die ich Ihnen monetar gebracht, so dass ich in Bezug auf ihn nicht dieselbe Zurücksetzung erfahre, als rücksichtlich australischer Pilze. Ich begann, (nach 6 jährigen Vorstudien in Europa) 1847 in Australien, Bailey aber erst vor etwa 20 Jahren, was aus der Flora Australiensis ersichtlich ist. Durch mich wurde er überhaupt erst in seinen botanischen Pfad gezogen, denn von 1847 (in Adelaide) bis 1873 (in Brisbane war er gewöhnlicher Gärtner) u ich habe ihm seit dem ausserordentliche Zeit u Mühe gewidment des Gebrauchs meiner vielen Werke gar nicht zu gedenken für die Förderung seiner Studien, die aber auf Queensland beschränkt sind, also nicht wie meine ganz Australien umfassen. Das Gerechteste wäre gewesen, wenn er seine Characeen durch mich an Sie sendete, wie es Prof Bracebr. Wilson in Bezug auf Algensendungen an Agardh stets thut durch viele Jahre.

Nordstedt (1891). G. Luehmann, writing to Nordstedt on M’s behalf on 4 April 1892 (in this edition as 92-04-04), reported that the third tranche of £10 had been sent and the remaining £8 would soon be sent. He reminded Norstedt that M could not subsidize continuation of the publication.

and you will receive this sum paid out at the local post office. I regret it very much that in the so very much reduced funds of the department it is not possible for me to support future Decades financially as well.

But since I have borne nearly the whole cost of the drawing and of the printing for the first Decade, I hope that the fine work will quickly become known and that you then will receive enough subscribers for the following Decades.

I am prepared to collect subscribers in Australia, if you think it possible to continue the work in such a manner. Dr Cooke reviewed it favourably in the Grevillea,

but in doing so said not a word that the idea of the work proceeded from me , and that the whole expense was borne by me.

The enclosed letter from Mr Bailey says that he would get the work through my department .

(or perhaps years ago very few) he had no claims on me because of that. Fortunately I had also sent him a free copy of this work of my own accord, as of all my other works, — otherwise, without knowing it, I would certainly have come under the unenviable suspicion of having withheld this Decade from him ! I hope in future on the further publication of the work you will not put my department on the same level with that of Brisbane, after the great sacrifices that I brought you monetarily, so that I do not experience the same neglect in reference to him with regard to Australian fungi. I began (after 6 years preliminary study in Europe) in 1847 in Australia, but Bailey only about 20 years ago, which is evident from the Flora Australiensis.

Bentham (1863-78).

He was generally first drawn into his botanical path through me , since from 1847 (in Adelaide) to 1873 (in Brisbane) he was a common gardener and since then I have devoted extraordinary time and trouble to him — not to think at all of the use of my many works — for the support of his studies, which however are restricted to Queensland , thus not like mine embracing the whole of Australia. as Prof. Bracebridge Wilson has always done for many years in regard to dispatch of Algae to Agardh.
