Letter not found.
Altho' my personal salary is continued, which I have always after my very frugal lonely life and support of charities sunk in the Department; but three fourth of the working expenses of the establishment have been taken away, so that for assistants museum-expenses, office-work correspondence, collecting, publications all and all only £400 are left! You can easily see, that the continuation of lithographic publications and much else &c will under such circumstances be an impossibility.

The vote for the Government Botanist was reduced in the1892 financial crisis; see M to A. McLean, 1 January 1892, and T. Wilson to M, 13 February 1892.
