The committee of the Ballarat Horticultural Society recently decided to convey to Baron Von Mueller an expression of their esteem for him as the leading scientific horticulturist in the colony, and to congratulate him upon the retention of his services by the Government. In reply, the following letter has been received from him by the president, Mr. A. Anderson:—
I feel much touched with the generous sentiments evinced towards me by the Horticultural Society of Ballarat, as expressed in your letter.

I shall cheerfully do all in my power, by sinking all my private resources (as I have done through out my whole career) into the official obligations devolving on me, to maintain the efficiency of the establishment and its scientific dignity, and to earn, also, in future the well wishes of my fellow colonists and contribute to the further development of the riches and knowledge in this great land of ours. Wishing, also, your important society the best success in its praise-worthy endeavors.—
I remain, Mr. President,
regardfully yours,
Fred.
