Letter not found. The text given here is from 'Phylloxera-proof vines', a letter to the Editor from E. & W. Hackett, South Australian register, 27 February 1892, p. 6. The quoted text is preceded by extracts of a report to the Viticulture committee of the Arondissement of Cognac on American vines in France.
[Through the kindness of Baron Sir Ferd. von Mueller, Government Botanist of Victoria, we have received from him a few seeds of some kinds of vitis, which are considered phylloxera-proof, namely : — x v. rupestris; vitis rupestris of Fortworth; vitis rupestris x v. cinerea; vitis riparia x v. rupestris, from Indian territory, grown in France; vitis riparia x v. rupestris. These, with one exception, are hybrids of American vines, and are recommended for stocks for grafting the best sorts of European vines on.
We are. Sir. &c.
E. & W. HACKETT.
