Letter not found. The text given here is from 'Local news', Mildura cultivator, 13 February 1892, p. 2. McKay was the editor. The quoted extract is introduced by 'Baron von Mueller, the Government botanist, always has a kindly thought for Mildura. This week he sends us the following:'
After the quotation the report continues 'The vine seeds he enclosed were as follows: Vitis Riparia and Rupestris , V. Cordifolia and Rupestris , V. Rupestris and Cinera [ cinerea ?], V. Rupestris of Fortworth, and the V. Riparia and Rupestris , from vines raised in France, originally procured from the Indian territory of the United States. These seeds are well worth looking after. Should the phylloxera ever gain a footing in Victoria again, resistant stocks would command very high prices. We shall be glad to distribute the seeds among such settlers as will undertake to give them careful attention.' M discusses these and other species of Vitis in B91.09.01, pp. 508-18.
It gives me much pleasure to send you fresh seeds of vitis , considered phylloxera proof, which may be acceptable, as that pest may again invade our colony.
