Es ist meine Absicht, hochgeehrter Herr Prof. Saccardo, Ihnen von Zeit zu Zeit frisch hier gesammelte Pilze zu senden, falls solche Ihnen für Benennung annehmbar sind, und Sie mir Dubletten benannt zurücksenden wollen. Der Zweck des Sendens ist im Besonderen folgender: In der neuern Mycographie ist die Diagnostic eine bedeutend andere als vor 30 und zwanzig Jahren, wie ich meine Pilze successiv an Berkeley sandte. Damals wurden die Arten meistens für identisch mit Species in Europa erklärt, und so war es mit den californischen Pilzen ebenfalls, so dass von etwa 800 Arten kaum einige als neu beschrieben wurden von den damaligen englischen Mycographen. Seitdem ist aber eine Änderung in der Auffassung der Arten entstanden, und jetzt finden Cooke und Massee und Andere in jeder Sammlung von hier Neues, selbst von längst durchsuchten Gegenden und sogar unter den grösseren Hymenomyceten. Es wäre also wichtig auch Ihre Ansicht über die Arten-Stellung selbst der gewöhnlichsten Pilze Australiens zu haben, zumal wenn eine Anzahl Exemplare mit successiven Posten authentisch von Ihrer Hand benannt an mich für die grosse und permanente Staats-Anstalt hier zurückkämen. Sollten Sie unter den Ihnen zugehenden Pilzen etwas Neues finden, möchte ich Sie bitten es an Dr W. Thiselton-Dyer, den Director des Kew Gartens zu senden, wo Dr Cooke solche Novitäten dann für sein beabsichtigtes Werk über die Mycographie Australiens verwerthan kann. In Fällen, wenn nur Unica von neuen Species existiren, könnten solche wohl in Italien abgebildet werden, und würde ich gern zu den Kosten des Zeichnens und Lithographirens beitragen , wenn ich in solchen Fällen eine Anzahl Abdrücke erhalten könnte. Würden Sie so freundlich sein, mir zu sagen, wieviel ich zu den Kosten solcher Lithogramme beizutragen haben würde. Da Australien jetzt in den Post-Verband eingetreten ist, kann unser wissenschaftlicher Verkehr billiger durchgeführt werden, als früher.

Ich habe Ihnen in der deutschen Sprache geschrieben, aber wenn Sie es vorziehen, könnten meine Briefe in Zukunft english sein. Brauchen Sie etwas Besonderes für Ihren bot. Garten, vielleicht Samen seltener Eucalypten? Kann ich etwas für die wissenschaftliche Societät in Ihrer Stadt thun? Noch möchte ich Sie bitten, mir recht bald eine Notiz zu senden über essbare Pilze besonders guter und wichtiger Sorten, welche noch nicht in die 8te Ausgabe meiner "Select plants" aufgenommen sind. Solche Notizen würden unter Ihrem hohen Namen erscheinen in der neunten (englischen) edition.

Es ist erfeulich, dass Sie gelegentlich einen Pilz dem Entdecker dediciren. Dr Cooke entmuthigt die Sammler durch seine extreme Abneigung, deren Namen mit etwas Neuem in Benennung zu bringen. Wer mochte diesen Wunsch der Ambition irgend Jemand verdenken?

It is my intention, highly esteemed Professor Saccardo, to send you freshly collected fungi from here from time to time, if they are acceptable to you for naming, and you are willing to send me the duplicates back named. In particular the object of the sending is the following: In the new mycology the diagnosis is significantly different than 30 and twenty years ago, when I sent my fungi successively to Berkeley. At that time the species were mostly declared to be identical with species in Europe, and so it was also with the Californian fungi, so that of about 800 species hardly any were described as new by the then English mycologists. Since then, however, a change in the conception of species has arisen and now Cooke and Massee and others find new things in every collection from here, even from regions thoroughly searched through long ago and even among the larger

Therefore it would be important to also have your opinion about the species situation even of the most common fungi of Australia, especially if a number of specimens came back to me by successive mails authentically named by your hand for the large and permanent State institution here. If you should find something new among fungi sent to you, I ask you to send it to Dr W. Thiselton-Dyer, the Director of Kew Gardens, where Dr Cooke can then use such novelties for his intended work on the mycology of Australia.

In cases where only unica exist of new species, they could I suppose be figured in Italy and I would willingly contribute to the costs of drawing and lithographing, if in such cases I could receive a number of offprints. Would you be so kind as to tell me how much I would have to contribute to the cost of such lithographs. Since Australia has now entered the postal union, our scientific contact can be more cheaply carried out than previously.

I have written to you in the German language, but in the future my letters can be in English if you prefer it. Do you need anything in particular for your botanical garden, perhaps seeds of rare eucalypts? Can I do anything for the scientific society in your city? Now I would like to ask you to send me a note very soon about edible fungi , particularly good and important species that are not yet included in the 8th edition of my Select plants.

No notes attributed to Saccardo appear in B95.08.04. The same general note that had appeared in B91.09.01 was republished in the entry for Agaricus ostreatus: 'For fuller information on fungs for the table consult as very accessible works Badhams's “Esculent Funguses of England," and Cooke's “British Fungi”; for systematic characteristics see the works of Fries, Berkeley, Cooke, Saccardo.'

It is pleasing that now and again you dedicate a fungus to the discoverer. Dr Cooke discourages the collectors by his extreme aversion in linking their names with something new in naming. Who would hold this desire of ambition against anyone?
