On 10 August 1891, Howitt as Acting Secretary for Mines forwarded Stirling's report, 'Notes on the climate and soil of the Australian Alps with reference to the suitability of the higher altitudes for rural settlements, with addenda by Baron Von Mueller', to the Secretary for Lands. He prefaced the report with a note of his own declaring that from his own experience of the Alpine Districts over thirty years, ‘I feel no doubt as to there being scope for very considerable settlement in some of the directions indicated by Mr Stirling and Baron v. Mueller'.
Regardfully your
Ferd. von Mueller.

again enlarged, through the press.
To these Reports should still be added an approximate calculation of the areal extent of the Australian Alps.
