The Baron von Mueller, K.C.M.G.,
Melbourne.
My Dear Baron,
Count Wachtmeister and myself have just seen Sir Thomas Elder. He desires that the
enquiry be made, and official reply obtained from the proper authorities at Stockholm,
as to the actual cost estimated to place the Expedition to the Antarctic upon a quite
efficient and satisfactory basis. Upon receiving to this enquiry a reply that £15,000
will be really amply sufficient, Sir Thomas holds himself ready to pay his promise
of £5,000. If you will obtain this reply through the Swedish Consul-General it will
expedite matters very greatly. The Count is also writing you. I am compelled to close
for this day's mail.
Very faithfully, Sir,
Yours,
A. T. MAGAREY, Hon. Sec.
P.S.—A cable enquiry will be necessary to save time.
