being appointed a licensed surveyor, New South Wales Government Gazette, 29 January 1873, p. 269.
licenced Surveyor under the Government of N. S. Wales, for the fellowship of the Linnean
Society of England, for which honor he is worthy through his zealous palaeontologic
researches.

The nomination was forwarded by William Woolls to the Linnean Society in a letter
of 5 June 1891 in which he identified Sutherland as living at Bathurst and said that
he ‘is connected with one of our most respected medical practitioners’. Sutherland
was the step-son of W. F. Bassett.
