Baron Sir F. von Mueller K.C.M.G.
Melbourne: Victoria.
My dear Baron
Your favour of 18th inst. was received. We are sorry that Mr Helms has not been content
to work pleasantly with our Council.
His case is referred by the Council to our Sub-Committee on Exploration. There seems
to be no action open, in view of his defiances of the Council, and insubordination,
but to recall him. With this possibility before us the question arises as to whether
it may become desirable to forward someone else to Western Australia, to supersede
him. In such case a qualified man will be required. Will you keep the matter before
your mind, & see if you have anyone in view. Please do not treat this as otherwise
than confidential at this stage.

Richard Helms, appointed naturalist to the Elder Scientific Exploring Expedition.
As to the "
Antarctic
". We have arranged for a representative Deputation to wait upon our Government on
Monday next; & will report. Sir Thomas Elder has placed his name at the head of
The Subscription List
for the £100 -
He refers also (confidentially to our Council) to the £5000 offer which he made &
was published in your papers in November of last year(?). That promises holds good
still, on the understanding that adequate funds, to make the matter an assured success,
are forthcoming. Can you inform me authentically what amount is required in all, to
enable the Expedition to be sent out to do efficient work? £30.000 is the sum named
here. Is that the required amount? Excuse, pray, my troubling you: but an authentic
estimate is desirable
A reply by return mail, if convenient, would be a favour.
I am Sir
Yours very faithfully
A. J. Magarey
Hon Sec.
