Letter not found. Text is an extract from the minutes of a meeting held on 10 November
1891 of the Antarctic Exploratory Expedition Committee of the NSW Branch of the Royal
Geographical Society of Australasia. The Secretary of the Committee had been requested
to find out when the colony's new Premier, George Dibbs, 'would be pleased to receive
a deputation for the purpose of ascertaining his views on this subject [Antarctic
exploration] and whether he would be willing to carry out the promise made by Sir
Henry Parkes to contribute towards this Antarctic undertaking'. He reported calling
at the Colonial Secretary's Office where the Chief Clerk had been unable to find a
record of Parkes's promise, made to an earlier deputation, that NSW would contribute.

As reported, Parkes's 'generous offer' of £1,333.16.18 was provisional on a further
£666 being raised by subscriptions, bringing the total contribution from NSW to $2,000.
