31 March [1891]
Baron Sir F. von Mueller K.C.M.G.
Melbourne: Vict.
My dear Baron
I have today requested any further nomination for Second in Command,
1
Of the Elder Scientific Exploring Expedition, 1891-2. See A. Magarey to M, 31 March 1891 (in this edition as 91-03-31a).
at request of our Committee & we shall be indebted to you if you have an experienced man for the post.
Our Council specially desires that you will favour us with suggestions for "Instructions" for the Scientific Members of the party. Doubtless those to the New Guinea Expedition would be of value. Mr Tietkens cannot join the Expedition on account of private interests which prevent. Otherwise it was Sir Thomas Elder's desire that he should have the position of Second in Command. The desire was that the party should get away by the 12th April. But Dr Elliot could follow after by rail & overtake the party, if need be, up the "Line".
2
Overland Telegraph Line. See M to A. Magarey, 31 March 1891 (in this edition as 91-03-31d).
With thanks in advance for your anticipated help in the directions suggested.
I am Sir
Yours very faithfully
A. T. Magarey
Hon. Sec.
