Monsieur le Baron et cher Confrère,
Je ne saurais vous exprimer combien j'ai été sensible à votre dédicace et aux considerants par les quels vous avez bien voulu la motiver. On a donné mon nom à quelques invertébrés marins; et mes traveaux sur cette branche de la Zoologie me donnaient peutetre quelques droits à cette distinction. Mais je n'avais aucune titre à l'honneur de baptiser une belle espèce végétale que son habitat rend doublement remarquable. Je ne puis voir là de votre part qu'un aimable et bien honorable d'estime et de sympathie personnelle. C'est là ce dont je suis vivement touché.

I don’t know how to express to you how much I have been gratified by your dedication and by the grounds on which you have been led to it. My name has been attached to some marine invertebrates and my labours in that branch of Zoology give me perhaps some claim to this distinction. But I have no claim at all to the honour of baptizing a beautiful vegetable species,

the habitat of which renders it doubly remarkable. I can only see it as an amiable and most honourable token on your part of esteem and personal sympathy, and that has keenly touched me.
