The Pittosporum, sent by you, dear Mr Gill, is — as you thought — P. phillyroides D.C. I traced it across to the Australian Continent in 1856 right to the sandstone plateau at the sources of the Victoria River.

is attributed to Linnaeus (1753). M's allusion to Tusanus, also known as Toussain and Tousanus (c. 1499-1547), probably referring to Bude, Toussain & Constantin (1562), vol. 1, p. 840, or another edition, is consistent with his view that pre-Linnean authors should not be forgotten. See, for example, his comment on Coronopus ruelli in M to B. Daydon Jackson, 25 December 1891 (in this edition as 91-12-25b).
