Während einer wissenschaftlichen Reise, welche ich kürzlich nach Neu Seeland übernahm, gelangte Ihr gütiges Schreiben hier an, geehrter Herr, in welchem Sie mir mittheilen, dass Ihre so schöne Genossenschaft "Flora" mich zu deren Ehren-Mitglied erkor. Diese unerwartete grosse Auszeichnung muss ich um so höher anerkennen, als ich nur so geringe Ansprüche an die Güte Ihrer prächtigen Union haben kann, denn meine Mitwirkung aus antipodaler Ferne kann doch ja nur eine schwache sein. Indessen werde ich mich bemühen, den schönen Interessen und dem erhebenden Wirken, welche Ihre Genossenschaft vertritt mit so vielem dortigen Erfolg, auch hier für Sie alle förderlich zu sein. Gebieten Sie daher nur über meine Mithülfe, soweit solche von hier es vermag, die wichtigen Aufgaben Ihrer Vereinigung durchzuführen.

M had attended the Congress of the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science, of which he was the retiring Prresident, held in Christchurch, 15-22 January 1891, and had afterwards undertaken a tour to the Southern Alps at Mt Cook.

esteemed Sir, your kind letter arrived here, in which you inform me that your so fine society "Flora" elected me its honorary member.

I must value this unexpected great distinction all the more highly as I can have so little claim on the goodness of your splendid union, since my participation from antipodal distance can really only be a slight one. Nevertheless I shall endeavour to promote here too the noble interests and the uplifting work that your society advocates with so much success there. Therefore just command my assistance as far as such is in my power to carry out the important tasks of your union from here.
