viele Jahre in reger Correspondenz stand.
Howitt Esqr. Secretary of the Department for Mines

Best thanks, highly esteemed Professor, for the kind sending of your splendid paper
on the botanical inclusions of the Baltic amber.
So we shall gradually become clear about the past vegetation complexes. This fine
monograph also reminds me particularly of the excellent Göppert, with whom I as Garden
Director stood in lively correspondence for many years. Likewise the fossil conifers
interest me particularly as well, because it fell upon me to give the detailed description
of a conifer widely distributed in the oldest Pliocene, my

Described in B71.05.02.
My department, however, does not distribute this paper, because I gave assistance
to the Mines Department here honoris causa on the vegetable palaeontology of Australia. However, it just needs a letter from
you to A.W. Howitt Esqr., Secretary of the Department for Mines, Melbourne (the son
of the poet pair William and Mary Howitt) to get both decades of the Vegetable fossils of the auriferous drifts,
especially if you also send him your new monograph. I shall send you by post the
previously published decades of the Australian Salsolaceae,
since you are certainly especially interested in this plant family on the Baltic.

I am just back from the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science, where
I as previous president had to install Sir J. Hector.
