Original in private hands; MS is a photocopy accompanied by an extra-print of B90.10.01. See also specimens of troedelii (MEL 696324) with M's standard herbarium label ' Troedeli, | F. v. M | Leigh's Creek. | 1877 Mrs Richards' and an annotation in M's hand on the sheet, 'Mit bestem Grusse' [With best regards]. The specimens, given by M to Troedel, were presented to the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne by his descendants in 1990, together with the photocopy of M's letter.

Es macht mir besondere Freude, lieber Herr Troedel, Ihnen eine kleine Immortelle zu überreichen, welche ich Ihnen zu Ehren benannt habe. Freilich ist es nur ein bescheidenes Pflänzchen, aber doch ein besonderes Emblem des Unvergesslichkeit. Es bieten sich nun nur selten Prachtpflanzen für Dedicationen, u. wenn sich dies gelegentlich ereignet, kann man bei der Zueignung den Entdecker auch nicht übergehen. Diese kleine Pflanze ist bisher nur aus der Nähe von Silverton und von einer Stelle aus Central Australien bekannt. Wahrscheinlich ist sie aber anderswo zwischen anderen Immortellen übersehen, u. vermuthlich hat sie eine weite Verbreitung durch das grosse Innere des australischen Continents. Solche Pflanzen, wie diese, lassen sich leicht aus Samen ziehen, u. so kann ich Ihnen vielleicht später diese Art als Topfpflanze präsentiren. Nehmen Sie denn, mein geehrter Freund, dies kleine Merkmal meiner Achtung für Sie und die Ihrigen hin. Wenn auch nur gering, so ist es doch ein bleibendes und lebendiges Andenken.

It gives me particular pleasure, dear Mr Troedel, to present to you a small everlasting that I have named in your honour.

The plant, described in B90.10.01, p. 77, as troedelii , 'is dedicated to Charles Troedel. Esq., an honoured friend of the author through many years, from whose splendid lithographic establishment many hundred plates have emanated for works issued by the Phytologic Department of Melbourne'.

Though it is only a humble little plant, it is nonetheless a special symbol of remembrance. Magnificent plants are available only rarely for dedications now but, when occasionally it does happen, one cannot very well ignore the discoverer in the naming. So far this little plant is known only from near Silverton

Barrier Range, NSW. The collections listed in B90.10.01, p. 77 are 'Near the Barrier-Ranges; Mrs Irvine; At Leight's (i.e. Leigh) Creeks, beyond Beltana [SA]; Mrs Richards'.

and from one place in Central Australia. But it has probably been overlooked elsewhere among other everlastings, and it is likely that it has a wide distribution throughout the vast interior of the Australian continent. Plants like this are easily grown from seed, and perhaps later on I may be able to present this species to you as a pot plant. Accept then, my honoured friend, this small token of my respect for you and your family. Although insignificant, it is yet a lasting and living commemoration.
