MS is accompanied by an envelope: 'On Her Majesty's Service. Walter Gill Esq | Conservator
of Forests &c | Adelaide' and 'Government Botanist, | Melbourne, 18/8 1890'. The front
bears the frank stamp of the 'CHIEF SECRETARY VICTORIA' and the postal stamp 'MELBOURNE
| AU 18 | 90'. There is an annotation, probably by Gill: 'Re Linnean Society'. The
back is stamped 'G.P.O. ADELAIDE S.A. | AU 20 | 90'.
I was under the impression, dear Mr Gill, that I had proposed you for the fellowship
of the LS.,
as I have done for your predecessor,
but amidst multitudinous engagements I must have stopped short at the intention.
A few £ entrance fee are payable, after election, and then a few £ annually, for which
then you get the superb publications of each year gratis. If you like to join, I will
arrange all that is needful for an early election into this great Society.

It would appear that Gill asked to be nominated; see M to the Linnean Society, London,

As this is a moist season, I trust good collections of bot specimens will be forthcoming
from the interior under such favorable circumstances. I like to advance the knowledge
of Austr. native plants still a little further, before I pass away from my earthly
career.
