Es liegt mir die ehrenvolle Pflicht ob, edler Herr, Ihre Zuschrift vom 18 April anzuerkennen, und meinen tief-gefühlten Dank auszusprechen für die hohe Ehre, welche Ihre berühmte und alt-ehrwürdige Gesellschaft mir so unerwartet erwies, mich in die Zahl ihrer auswärtigen Mitglieder aufzunehmen.
Im späten Herbst eines bewegten Lebens ist es für mich noch besonders erhebend, einer Union zugezählt zu sein, welche so viele Herren der Wissenschaft vergangener Generationen einschloss, welche so viele leuchtende Geister der Gegenwart umfasst, und welche so viele Vertreter progressiven Denkens auch in der Zukunft zusammen führen wird! In einer solchen glorreichen Kette ein Glied bilden zu dürfen, gehört gewiss zu den glänzendsten Errungenschaften eines Sterblichen!
Als Halb-Skandinavier habe ich seit zeitigster Studien-Periode eine besondere Verehrung für das Wissenschafts Wirken in den Nordländern gehabt und auch stets bewahrt; - und so fühle ich mich denn zu den Mitgliedern Ihrer schönen Union besonders hingezogen. Verdanke ich doch meine Bildung bis durch den Universitäts Cursus königlich dänischen Einrichtungen und Anstalten, einer Gunst, welcher ich mit Pietät eingedenk bleibe. - Indem ich nun dem verehrten Herrn Präsidenten und den Herren Räthen und anderen Mitgliedern meinen ehrerbietigen Gruss entbiete, möchte ich Sie auffordern, mir mitzutheilen, auf welche Weise ich Ihren dortigen Bestrebungen von hier aus antipoder Ferne am Besten nützlich sein kann.

and express my deepfelt thanks for the high honour that your celebrated and venerable society so unexpectedly bestowed on me, in admitting me into the number of your foreign members.

In the late autumn of a troubled life it is particularly uplifting for me to be numbered among a union that included so many men of science of past generations, that includes so many illustrious intellects of the present time, and which will assemble so many representatives of progressive thinking in the future! To be permitted to form a link in such a glorious chain certainly belongs to the most brilliant achievements of a mortal!
As a half Scandinavian I have had and also always preserved a particular admiration for the scientific work in the northern countries since the earliest period of study; and so then I am particularly attracted to the members of your fine union. I do owe my education through to the university course to the Royal Danish establishments and institutions,

a favour which I keep in mind with piety. While now offering to the honourable president and to the gentlemen of the council and other members my respect, I would like to ask you to tell me in what way I can best be useful to your endeavours there from here in the antipodal distance.
