MS is a note in reply to a note from Pasco, 23 April 1890, saying he was in hospital
and passing on to M, for his information, a letter dated 9 April 1890 that he had received, in his capacity as President of the Victorian Antarctic Exploration
Committee, from G. S. Cooper, Under Secretary, New Zealand Colonial Secretary's Office, Wellington,
as follows:
I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 11th March addressed
to Sir John Hall in which you ask him to ascertain for the information of the Victorian
Antarctic Exploration Committee whether the Government of New Zealand would be willing
to place £1000 or more upon the next estimates in aid of the proposed exploration
of the Antarctic region. In accordance with Sir John Hall's request that an answer
to your inquiry might be sent direct to you I have the honour by direction of the
Colonial Secretary to inform you that this Government regret they are unable to see
their way to ask Parliament to vote the required subsidy.
