I have the honor to request, that you will please to permit me to retain the services
of two youths,
who have been engaged in my branch since the 1st of January with your consent, and
whose term will expire on 31st March, for a further period of three months. They are
employed 4 days a week, and receive a remuneration of respectively 4/ and 3/ a day,
paid out of my vote for Contingencies.

Deakin approved M's request on 19 March 1890, and on 21 March M returned the file
'with best thanks'. The Under Secretary, T. Wilson, subsequently forwarded the file
to the Commissioners of Audit 'for their information'.
The initial request in M to A. Deakin, 23 December 1889 had been approved, but when renewal was again requested in M to T. Wilson, 1 July 1890, only one of the youths was permitted to be retained. M opted to retain George French.
