Letter found with a specimen of Cystopteris tasmanica (MEL 571776) and with an off-print of the description of Woodsia laetevirens by C. Prentice in Bailey (1891), p. 37. The off-print is annotated by F. M. Bailey:
'Ex from Botany Bulletin No — Agr. Dept with F M B's Compliments'.
MS annotation by M: 'Beantw 22/3/90' [answered 22 March 1890]. Letter not found.

Geehrtester Herr Baron.
Die Pflanzen in mitgehendem Packet kommen die meisten nicht weiter von der Grenzlinie,
denn ungefähr 20 Meilen oder weniger. Das darin befindliche
scheint sich nicht mit irgend einer Art die in Ihrem "Key" beschrieben sind übereinstimmen
zu lassen. Ich habe dieselbe bis jetzt blos an einer Stelle gefunden u. zwar ganz
unter dem Schutz von Felsen ungegähr 6.000 f über der Meeresfläche. Mit besten Wünschen
für Ihre Gesundheit bleibe ich

Most esteemed Baron,
Most of the plants in the accompanying packet come not far from the border,
no further than about 20 miles or less. The
in it does not seem to agree with any of the species described in your "Key".
So far I have found it only in one place, completely under the shelter of rocks,
at approximately 6,000 feet above sea level.
