Dear Sir,
Mr. John Shirley, B.Sc., of the London University and also of this University, has
applied for admission to the Examination for the degree of D.Sc. in the subject of
Botany.
3
Shirley was awarded the D.Sc of the University of Sydney in 1912 (ADB), for a thesis entitled 'The thallus of the genus Parmelia'. It would appear, therefore,
that his earlier application either did not proceed or was unsuccessful.
The Examination will commence on Monday the 17. of March.
In the absence of Dr Haswell, the recently appointed Professor of Biology, Dr. Cobb,
who has been appointed the locum tenens for Lent and Trinity Terms, will act as one
of the Examiners and I have the honour to enquire if you will be willing to take a
part in the Examination.
There have been no candidates as yet for the D.Sc. Degree but it is the general opinion
that the standard of the Examination should be not less than that required in other
Universities, say the University of London.
I have the honour to be,
Dear Sir,
Your obedient servant
H E Barff
Registrar
Baron Von Mueller K.C.M.G.
Melbourne.
