Sir,
I have the honor to express my best thanks for the promotion of Mr Charl. French junior
to the position, vacant by the advancement of Mr Minchin
in the service of this establishment,
and beg also, that my gratitude in this respect be conveyed to the Public service
Commissioners.

On 20 January the Public Service Board notified Deakin of the promotion of French
to date from that day. H. Moors, for the Under Secretary, sent the letter to M, who
returned the file on 21 February adding: 'Letter of thanks annexed'. The file also
carries a note in an unknown hand: '£9.10/- per mth' (Q90/884, unit 499, VPRS 3992/P,
PROV). For the letter of thanks, see M to T. Wilson, 21 February 1890 (in this edition
as 90-02-21a).

The file also includes a letter from C. H. French to A. Deakin, 29 January 1890: 'I
have the honor to tender you my sincere thanks for your kindness in promoting me from
the position of third to that of second Herbarium Assistant. I shall endeavour to
merit the confidence reposed in me to the best of my ability.'
