M must have written this letter no more than a few days before the outings to which he refers. It is here assumed
that he wrote on the Friday preceding the visit to Ballarat.

Sir.
I have the honor to inform you, that availing myself of the general permission, granted
by the Government,
I shall in accordance with a special municipal invitation accompany the Members of
the Austral. Association to Ballarat on Monday, and to Sandhurst
on Tuesday,
returning on the evening of that day. I shall during these two days of course be in
telegraphic communication with my Office.

The Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science held its Second Congress
in Melbourne in January 1890. The excursions to Ballarat and Sandhurst were on 13
and 14 January.
