Telegram not found. The text given here is from 'Congratulations from Tasmania', Herald (Melbourne), 9 January 1890, p. 1. The text of the telegram is introduced by 'Baron von Mueller received the following telegram this morning from the Governor of Tasmania: —'. The Governor, Sir Robert Hamilton, was the President of the Royal Society of Tasmania. After quoting the telegram, the news item continues 'Baron von Mueller sent a suitable reply' (letter not found).
The Herald was an afternoon paper, and the telegram is therefore dated to the date of the issue.
The president of Royal Society of Tasmania congratulates Baron von Mueller on the auspicious opening of the meeting of the Australasian Association for The Advancement of Science.

M was the president of the Melbourne meeting of the Association, which opened with his Presidential address (B90.01.01; B90.13.01 is the Association’s official record) on the evening of 7 January 1890 (see 'General programme for the meeting’' in Spencer (1890), p. xvi).
