Telegram not found. The text given here is from 'Congratulations from Tasmania', Herald (Melbourne), 9 January 1890, p. 1. The text of the telegram is introduced by 'Baron von Mueller received the following telegram this morning from the Governor of
Tasmania: —'. The Governor, Sir Robert Hamilton, was the President of the Royal Society
of Tasmania. After quoting the telegram, the news item continues 'Baron von Mueller
sent a suitable reply' (letter not found).
The
Herald
was an afternoon paper, and the telegram is therefore dated to the date of the issue.

M was the president of the Melbourne meeting of the Association, which opened with
his Presidential address (B90.01.01; B90.13.01 is the Association’s official record)
on the evening of 7 January 1890 (see 'General programme for the meeting’' in Spencer
(1890), p. xvi).
