A reply to the cable message sent by the Royal Geographical Society of Australia to Zanzibar congratulating Mr H. M. Stanley on his success and safe return, and expressing sympathy with Emin Pasha in his sad accident, has been received by the President of the Society, Baron von Mueller. Mr Stanley telegraphs,
The date is confirmed by references in other newspapers that report on telegraphed news from Melbourne dated 12 December, for example, Brisbane courier, 13 December 1889, p. 5 stating that 'this evening, Baron von Mueller received.'

Stanley had led an expedition across Africa to rescue Emin Pasha (Isaak Eduard Schnitzer), besieged by Sudanese forces near Lake Albert. After arriving safely with Stanley in Bagamoya on the East African coast in what is now Tanzania, Emin was injured when he stepped through a window he had mistaken for an opening to a balcony.
