Mr French

was instructed, to report himself to the Secretary of Agriculture as ready for his new duties of Entomologist nearly two weeks ago, and did so. He has again yesterday been requested, to call on Mr Martin, and there is nothing to detain him in my Department.

On 25 September 1889, the Secretary for Agriculture, D. Martin, wrote to T. Wilson, Under Secretary, Chief Secretary's Office: 'I have the honor to inform you of the appointment of Mr C. French, First Herbarium Assistant of your Department to the Office of Entomologist for this Department, and I shall feel obliged by your causing him to be relieved of his present duties when convenient, and requesting him to report himself here'.
M's minute was in response to an ' Urgent ' minute sent to him on 27 September by Moors for the Under Secretary: 'Referred to the Government Botanist with the request that he will be good enough to instruct Mr French to report himself for duty, to the Secretary for Agriculture as early as possible. It is also requested that a formal requisition for a successor to Mr French may be forwarded to this Office.'
On the matter of French's replacement, see M to T. Wilson, 1 October 1889 (in this edition as 89-10-01b).
