In Beantwortung Ihres freundlichen Briefes vom 12. Mai, geehrter Freund, erlaube ich mir meine volle Genehmigung der von Sr. Excellenz dem Herrn Präsidenten Dr. v. Silcher und Ihnen selbst gewünschten Änderung in den Statuten meiner kleinen Wissenschafts Stiftung auszusprechen. Nur in einer Hinsicht möchte ich vorschlagen, dass die Änderung weitergreifend werde; es ist dies: Dass nach § 2 für die Reise Unterstützungen innerhalb Europa die Hälfte des Jahrsbetrags der Einnahme zu Gebot gestellt werde, da bisher das Capital doch eigentlich für einen so grossen Zweck sehr gering ist.
Dass ich das Stipendium Medicinere besonders zuwenden wollte, beruhte einfach auf die erleichtnete Weise solcher Gelehrter, in welcher diese überall durch Ausübung derer Profession leicht nebenher etwas verdienen können, was bei der bisherigen Kleinheit des Stipendiums in Betracht zu ziehen war.
Übrigens käme ja der volle Betrag für einen Stipendiaten in dessen Bereich schon dadurch, wenn er von der biologischen Station in Neapel über das Mittel-Meer nach der nordafrikanischen Küste gelangte, wo wohl noch manche Gegenden neues Terrain für original Beobachtungen bieten möchten.
Noch möchte ich darauf hindeuten, dass ein erkrankter Gelehrter, der einem deutschen Winter einmal zu entgehen sucht, ja innerhalb der Statuten den ganzen Jahres Betrag des Stipendiums erlangen könnte, wenn er sich auch nur nach Algier, Tunis oder Morocco begäbe, wo ja noch immer reiches u leicht erlangbares Material zu erlangen ist für wichtige neue Untersuchungen z. B. ob Strychnin oder andere Substanzen, hypodermisch angewandt die durch Ophidian-Gift herbeigefuhrte Ataxia zu überwinden vermögen, der Geologie, Entomologie u anderer Wissenschafts Branche nicht zu gedenken.

In answer to your kind letter of 12 May, esteemed friend, I venture to express my complete approval of the change in the statutes of my small scientific foundation desired by His Excellency the President Dr von Silcher and you yourself. Only in one respect would I like to suggest that the change become far reaching; it is this: That after § 2 for the travel assistance within Europe half of the annual amount of the income be made available, because hitherto the capital is really very small for such a large purpose.
That I intended to give the scholarship to medical people particularly was based simply on the alleviated manner of such savants, in which they can easily earn something on the side everywhere through the practice of their profession, that was to be taken into consideration with the hitherto smallness of the scholarship.
Incidentally the full amount could certainly come for a scholarship holder in his field already by this means, if he reached the north African coast, where probably still some regions may offer new terrain for original observations, from the biological station in Naples via the Mediterranean Sea.
In addition I should like to point out that a savant with an illness who just sought to escape a German winter, could indeed within the statutes gain the whole year's amount of the scholarship, even if he only went to Algiers, Tunis or Morocco, where abundant and easily collectable material is still to be got for important new investigations, e.g. whether strychnine or other substances, hypodermically administered, are able to overcome the ataxia caused by snake poison, not to think of geology, entomology and other scientific branches.
