Allow me to ask, dear Mr Crisp
whether my annual subscriptions to the Linnean Society are always paid by my Agents
at the required time, as I should feel much hurt, if these payments fell ever into
arrear. As the finance year of many Science-Societies is not coinciding with the chronologic
year, it might easily occur, that the exact time for payment was missed without I—at
so great a distance—being aware of it.
It would have been best, to compound at once for all payments, but I found difficulties
in doing this, as my comparatively slender resources are taxed severely and variously
in my social and scientific position.
1
In 1889 Crisp was Treasurer of the Linnean Society (Gage & Stearn, 1988, p. 220).

without ... aware of it is a marginal note indicated by an asterisk.

The letter is annotated in pencil on the back of the folio:
All paid 1889 paid 17 May Notice will be given if at any time in arrear.
Regardfully your
Ferd. von Mueller.
