Baron F von Mueller KCMG &c
My dear Sir,
I forwarded to you on Monday a parcel containing samples. The pieces of wood have
the numbers in my collection and the specimens of leaves, fruit &c are numbered to correspond. I shall be glad as soon as you have time, if you will favor
me with your remarks on the specimens. It has appeared to me that as some so called varieties of acknowledged species produced timber of an entirely different
character, the question might be considered whether they are not entitled to rank
as species instead of varieties.
I am sorry I have been unable to get the Eucalypts in flower — it is so difficult
to hit upon the right time oneself — and I find it almost impossible to infuse the
necessary enthusiasm into the residents and induce them to look out.
Yours very faithfully
H Deane
