The list is one of a number sent by Cooke that are now in the library of the Royal
Botanic Gardens Melbourne. This list comprises four pages, the back of each comprising
either a MS extract from a publication on a species of fungus, or a
pasted-on
entry from
a published text containing a description
, all which have been struck through by Cooke
.
The species abstracted are not on this list
.
The bottom of the first page is anno
t
ated in pencil by J. H. Willis: '26 Mar. 1889'
; the bottom of sheets 2, 3, and 4 are numbered in pencil in what may be another hand,
although the numerals resemble large versions of Cooke's numbers in the list.
See
notes to M. Cooke to M, 17 January 1885 for a discussion of Cooke's author attributions.

'French, C.' collected a specimen of
Puccinia dichondrae
in November 1887 from Cheltenham, Vic
(MEL
1054152). This is probably Charles French Snr, but his son Charles H. French also collected fungi, including some before 1889.

Ag (Pleurotus) salignus Fr Junior
16
FNI attributes the combination to Persoon, not Fries
.
'Junior' in the sense of young or immature. See Phillips (1878) where Cooke in a 'Note
on the above' wrote, in a discussion refuting the assertion, '
Dr. Quelet says that our
Ag. atropunctus
is his
Omphalia atro-puncta
(junior), and the
Hygrophorus
is his
Omphalia atropuncta
(vetustior)
' p. 75
.
There are other instances in Cooke's publications where 'junior' is used in this sense;
see for example Cooke (1885-6), p. 20, and Cooke (1892d), p. 106. (The editors are
indebted to Dr Tom W. May for clarification of Cooke's usage in referring to younger
versus older specimens.)
